Hunger Games Tweets |
This Tumblr page will expose the Hunger Games fans on Twitter who dare to call themselves fans yet don't know a damn thing about the books. |
Okay everyone, grab your pencils grab your notebooks and take a seat. Cate Matthews (@cateematthews on both Twitter and Tumblr, follow her) is about to break it all down for you guys.
Her video very quickly and simply shows us the way we’ve all been taught to default the people that we envision in books and generally in our minds as “white”. Unless we’re heavily (HEAVILY!) spoon-fed other bits of information to say otherwise, which even then sometimes fails.
Cate also shares some interesting research that shows the staggeringly low representation of minorities in recently published children’s books and the top 10 box-office movies.
This video was sent to me by chronic-nostalgia (thanks!).
P.S. - Cate’s name looked familiar to me and I then realized that she’s the same person that made this tweet.

Unfortunately it went over a lot of peoples’ heads (They didn’t get the connection it had to Rick Santorum and a foot-in-mouth comment he’d recently made but I thought it was funny)
P.P.S - Cate gets bonus points for the Squirtle and Charmander pics up on her wall in the background.
I’ve dreamt about seeing one of these videos made. If I had the talent I’d make one myself.
I hope someone with really creative writing skills can script and produce one of these. A lot of Downfall videos are hilarious but a lot of them also suck.
If anyone comes across a good one on YouTube please let me know about it.
Black Nerd Comedy: RANTS! HUNGER GAMES RACIST? No Blacks Allowed!
Are you guys ready for a good laugh?
Everybody, please meet Andre (@BlackNerd on Twitter) the creator and host of “Black Nerd Comedy” on YouTube.
Fearing that The Hunger Games was yet another “Twilight” or “Harry Potter”, he chose to avoid reading the book or watching the movie. HOWEVER, upon doing some research, he came to learn of the DRAMA concerning our dear friend, Rue.
Watch and enjoy as he shares his insights.

I finally got back in touch with LV Anderson from Slate. :o)
In the new article above, she shares some of my additional thoughts on the individuals that she got in touch with in her previous article (see my prior post).
I also had a chance to chat a bit about social media and the consequences of not knowing how to use it responsibly.

Great and insightful article above…
Maria Tatar writes an article for The New Yorker shedding some light on the tradition of why we see little blonde girls as the most innocent beings ever. As well as why we mourn their deaths moreso than others and why the alarms go off in our minds when they are kidnapped.
It’s only slightly Hunger Games related though (for those of you who go hard on Hunger Games but not so much on social commentary)

‘Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg helps Essence celebrate the strength and beauty of mothers.

Nicole Paulhus offers up a great article on The Hunger Games, Racism, and the habit of “white-washing” characters in novels.
Anna Holmes offers an insightful review of the racial controversy surrounding The Hunger Games and it’s parallels with what we see happening in our society.
(P.S. Unlike the other reviews/articles you’ve read, I was actually interviewed for this one. )
This breaks my heart.
@Maggie_mcd11 is (or was) the twitter user that’ll probably go down in history for creating the “not gonna lie” meme. As some of you know, the account has now been taken over by somebody offering a comedic spin on the meme.
According to Steve (who I’ll trust is truthfully a friend of hers), this girl is only 15. FIFTEEN! To me, that’s way too young to be saying stuff like Rue being black ruined the movie.
Not gonna lie though… There really is no right age to foster feelings like that.
Hunger Games is a controversial story (Oh—I’m sorry, I forgot to introduce myself: my name is Captain Obvious.). It’s got oppressive governments, famine, child-soldiering and gladiator slaughterfests with a dash of reality television. It pushes the idea that violence and conflict spares no one,…
This one had me laughing for a while. Special thanks to arulein for referring this tweet to me.
I just had to share this because I think it’s an awesome tweet.
I sense an error in his tweet.
I’m pretty sure that many of the people expressing shock over Rue being black experienced this as a result.
